...but complicated poetry is just not my genre(sp?) Recently, I had to rewrite a love sonnet by Shakespeare,(for school) and thought I would share the original, along with the edited version.
A Sonnet by Shakespeare
(the original)
Is it thy will, thy image should keep open
My heavy eyelids to the weary night?
Dost thou desire my slumbers should be broken,
While shadows like to thee do mock my sight?
Is it thy spirit that thou send'st from thee
So far from home into my deeds to pry,
To find out shames and idle hours in me,
The scope and tenor of thy jealousy?
O, no! thy love, though much, is not so great:
It is my love that keeps mine eye awake:
Mine own true love that doth my rest defeat,
To play the watchman ever for thy sake:
For thee watch I, whilst thou dost wake elsewhere,
From me far off, with others all too near.
(my version)
Is it your will, that thoughts of you are keeping
My tired eyes open at night?
Do you want me to be unable to sleep,
While shadows of you mock my sight?
Is it your spirit, sent from you
So far from home, to pry into all I do,
To find my guilt and restlessness,
The extended nature of your jealousy?
No! Even your love is not that strong:
It is my love that keeps me awake:
My own true love that makes sleep useless,
To guard you forever:
I watch for you, while you wake somewhere else,
Far away from me, while others are too close.
Did you survive?
